About Geospatial / GIS Data

GIS data typically comes in two forms: vector data or raster data.

  • Vector Data (Point, Line, Polygon)
    • Point: non-adjacent features and discrete data points
      • Eg: city locations, points of interest, or school locations
    • Line: linear features and one dimension (length) data
      • Eg: road center lines, hydrology
    • Polygon: two dimensional features and area and perimeter data
      • Eg: Boundary of a city, lake, or province
  • Raster Data (Grid)
    • Cell based data
      • Eg: aerial and satellite imagery
    • Two types: continuous and discrete
