ECS 300: Producing a bibliography in RefWorks

Producing a bibliography in RefWorks

  • When you've finished collecting references for a paper in RefWorks, and you want to print out your bibliography:
  • In your RefWorks account, click Create Bibliography above the citations:
  • At References to Include from, choose the file folder from which you want to create a bibliography from the list of folders on the right
  • At Select an Output Style, use the drop-down menu to select APA 6th - American Psychological Association, 6th Edition if you're in Education, or MLA 8th or Chicago 16th if you're in Fine Arts or Women's and Gender Studies
  • At Select a File Type, choose Rich Text Format (RTF). This works with both Macs and PCs and any word processor
  • Click
  • A window should pop up automatically asking if you want to download your document
  • If not, go to the box that opens in the bottom right of the screen and click the link to download the bibliography, or to email it to yourself:
  • Upon downloading the file, which will always be called by your Refworks username-RefList.rtf, you can either open or save your file, and rename it whatever you like, or append it to your paper. Close the Create Bibliography window in RefWorks
  • Use Stephanie Wiegand's APA Style, 6th Ed. to verify the citation style that RefWorks gives you. Sometimes it puts in things like "retrieved from ProQuest...", which APA 6th Edition doesn't require
  • If Stephanie Wiegand's APA Style, 6th Ed doesn't cover the things you need, then go to the Library's Help Desk on the first floor and ask for the APA manual, call number BF 76.7 P83 2010. You can use the Reserve copy for two hours in the Library.
  • Use the MLA 8th Edition Guide from Concordia University to check the citations in MLA format, and the Chicago 16th Edition to check the citation formats Chicago
