Abstract

An abstract is a brief summary of a papers main points and may be required in some formal essays. Abstracts allow readers to survey the contents of an essay to determine if it meets their own interests or research requirements and whether to continue reading. Abstracts are generally between 150-200 words and will typically answer some key questions. Electronic databases rely primarily on the words used in abstracts for searches.

Some basic tips on writing abstracts:

  1. Write the abstract last – this is to ensure accuracy and the most up to date revisions are addressed
  2. Follow all guidelines and instructions given by editors, publishers, instructors, or institutions
  3. Be accurate – use the same language and style as the rest of the paper, ensure it reflects the purpose, content, and information presented in the paper
  4. Be clear – define and spell out all acronyms, abbreviations, and any unique terms
  5. Be concise and Specific – each sentence should contain as much detail as possible. Include most important concepts, findings, and purpose
  6. Use key terms – select words carefully to ensure the paper reaches the right audience
