Which style should I use?

Question: There are so many styles and I am not sure which I should use for my paper.

Answer:  Your instructor may have a preference as to which style guide they want you to use.  If they do not have a preference use the following guidelines for deciding which is best for your assignment.

APA:

What it is used for:

The American Psychological Association's style guide is primarily used in the social sciences (including psychology) as well as increasingly in the natural and health sciences as well.  Be sure to use the most up-to-date revision (presently the sixth edition). 

Getting started:

American Psychological Association (2010).  Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 6th ed.  Washington, DC: Author.  Available in Archer Reference (1st floor)  BF 76.7 P83 2010

MLA:

What it is used for:

The Modern Language Association's style guide is most often used for the humanities (such as English, history and philosophy). Be sure to use the most up-to-date revision (presently the seventh edition).

Chicago / Turabian:

What it is used for: 

This style guide is used in a variety of disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, presently in its fifteenth edition.
