Artificial Intelligence

AI is integrated into more and more of our lives, how can you use it safely at school?

Positive Model of Academic Integrity

It's important when using AI generated content in your work to keep in mind the Positive Model of Academic Integrity:

  • Fairness: the scholarly community agrees to uphold academic standards equitably
  • Honesty: Present your work forthrightly and free of deceit
  • Trust: allows us to collaborate and circulate our new ideas without worrying they will be undermined or stolen (ie/ used without credit)
  • Respect: in academic communities, we show respect by caring about its opinions, reputation, and wellbeing
  • Responsibility: You are accountable for your actions, words, and works. We are all responsible for safeguarding the integrity of scholarship
  • Courage: hold yourself and the academic community to the highest standard, even when that’s an unpopular choice

When using Artificial Intelligence tools, we want to reinforce these values through practices such as citing AI or putting forward an AI Declaration

AI Declarations

Some classes, or if you go on to become a researcher, grant applications and publishers, now ask for an AI Declaration. This might include disclosures like:

  • “This work was completed without AI assistance”

  • “This paper was edited with the assistance of Name of generative AI tool (accessed Month Year). I have critically assessed and validated any generated feedback. The final version of the paper is my own creation.”

  • “This project was completed using AI tools at various points in the process:
    • Gemini (Dec 2024) was used for brainstorming and to generate a paper outline.
    • Elicit (Jan 2025) was used for to find literature.
    • Grammarly (Jan 2025) provided spellcheck and grammar correction.”
