PHIL 100-L01: Introduction to Philosophy (R. Petry): Searching for books

Basic Search

When searching for books, you'll use the Quick Find catalogue (see Where to Start tab).  Once there, type in your keyword(s) or search terms and then limit your results (on the left) to Books under Resource Type.

You can further limit your results by publication date, subject, language, home library, etc. as needed.

Your list of results will include both ebooks and print books in all four of the academic libraries on campus.

The following video (click on image below) demonstrates how to use a basic search to find and access an ebook in our catalogue.

For more tips and video tutorials on using Quick Find, please see Archer Library's Quick Find LibGuide.

Subject Browse

A Subject Browse can be helpful, especially if:

  • you are having difficulty determining keywords
  • you are still deciding on an essay topic
  • you need fairly general resources about a topic

Access the Browse feature by clicking on Quick Find, Advanced Search and then Browse (third heading across the top).  Click on the Browse By drop down menu and select Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH).

Remember that when typing a person's name into a Browse search, you must enter their last name first.

Click on the image below to view a demonstration of a subject browse.

Advanced Search

You can use an Advanced Search when needing to string together more than one keyword with search operator words, like and, or or not.

An Advanced Search can also help you locate items by title, author, and more.

The following video (click on image below) will demonstrate how to do an Advanced Keyword search, a Title search and an Author search.

Requesting access to printed material

The quickest way of obtaining a physical item located at one of the U of R Libraries is to physically go to its home library, find the item on the shelf, and take it and your ID card to that library's Borrowing Desk to check out.  However, there are alternate options available to those who cannot easily access campus:

  • pick-up books at the library of your choice (note that if you select a pick-up location that differs from the item's home library, it may take a couple of days for the item to get to the pick-up location)
  • mail delivery to your home (outside of Regina but within Canada)
  • digital delivery (where permitted by licenses and copyright)

See the videos below to learn how to place these requests in Quick Find.

Note:due to copyright regulations, we cannot provide an electronic scan of an entire book, nor can we digitize any sections of commercial textbooks.
