In Winter 2022, the Dr. John Archer Library & Archives received one of 950 limited edition signed copies of Antarctica, donated by the authors Pat and Rosemarie Keough. This lavish and celebrated publication contains, in addition to extensive text, 330 colour photographs documenting two years of Antarctic expeditions, all housed in a velvet-lined archival box. The library is honoured to have in our collection what the Los Angeles Times hailed as "amongst the finest original art books produced in modern times."
Antarctica has brought together a wide array of artists and artisans from around the world. The finest archival quality acid-free paper from America was used. Light-fast German inks were used to print the images. Moroccan goat leather was used for the covers, the doublure (or inside cover) are made with French flocked velvet. Irish linen thread and tapes were used to bind the book. The book was printed, bound, and embossed by hand in Canada. You can read more about the binding process here.
The tome is bound in grey leather with title and author's last name with a vignette of a mountain on the front cover. The doublures are made of grey suede.
This 19 pound book is hand-bound and contains 330 photographs.
